This alarming statistic reveals a shortage rate of 21.5% during a press conference held in Colombo. Senaratne emphasized the gravity of the situation, indicating that for every five essential medicines needed, one is currently missing in the country. The data presented showed that among life-saving drugs, one is in short supply, while 2,132 out of 3,200 necessary surgical materials are absent. Additionally, the availability of surgical instruments has dropped sharply, with 3,625 out of 4,100 currently unaccounted for. He pointed out that there are even notices displayed at Colombo’s National Hospital, instructing patients to bring their own bandages and plasters for treatment, highlighting the increasing challenges faced by the healthcare system. The shortage is so dire that even announcements regarding the needed surgical supplies are now a standard occurrence. Moreover, according to the hospital’s website for the Righway Arya Children's Hospital, there is a shortage of 42 medications and 61 surgical devices. Notably, this website has also been inaccessible in recent times, further complicating the information flow regarding available resources. Senaratne noted that under the current policies, many high-quality medications are being withdrawn from the market. He expressed concern over an unprecedented scarcity affecting not only government hospitals but also the private healthcare sector. In light of this critical situation, he called on the government to take immediate and focused action to address the pressing shortages in the healthcare system. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
