Minister Questions Police Appointment Amid Controversy A troubling revelation emerged in Parliament regarding the appointment of a police officer to the rank of Divisional Police Inspector in Kilinochchi, following an assertion by Badulla District Minister Chamara Sampath Dasanayake. He revealed that the appointment was effectively a reward for a senior police official with vested interests in a property in Trincomalee. The Minister raised his concerns during a parliamentary session, addressing the issue directly to Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Aluthgamage. He pointed out that typically, an individual appointed as a Divisional Police Inspector must have at least served as a police superintendent or, at the very least, held a position within the D-grade police rank. This particular officer does not meet those qualifications, raising eyebrows regarding the legitimacy of the appointment. Dasanayake expressed his astonishment at how the Inspector General of Police could justify such a recommendation, given the lack of requisite experience and credentials of the appointed officer. "This appointment raises serious questions, yet it seems the recommendation came directly from the IGP. It’s perplexing how the commission could approve this when the requirements are so clearly not met," he said. Highlighting the need for qualified personnel, the Minister noted that right now, the appointed officer does not possess the necessary qualifications to fulfill the responsibilities of the role. He further clarified that temporary appointments can only last up to one year, implying a limited timeframe for the current officer. Dasanayake stated that he has formally notified the Police Commission to appoint a more suitable candidate for the position, emphasizing the essential standard of competence required for such critical roles within the police force. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
