Severe Drought Devastates Small Water Reservoirs, Threatening Food Security for Farmers The prolonged drought affecting the entire nation has led to the drying up of over 7,000 small water reservoirs, raising serious concerns for agriculture. This alarming situation poses a significant risk of crop devastation, particularly impacting approximately 150,000 farming families. Sunil Gamage, the chairman of the All Sri Lanka United Farmers' Organization, highlighted that approximately 14,000 small reservoirs, which provide water for around 200,000 hectares of agriculture, are currently facing severe water shortages, with more than a hundred of them completely dried up. In regions where rice and other crops are harvested, around 50,000 acres have already experienced total crop loss due to the ongoing drought. Furthermore, an additional 75,000 acres are under threat of destruction as a result of the water scarcity. The deteriorating conditions have plunged roughly 150,000 farming families into a serious economic crisis. Gamage emphasized the government's lack of proper attention to strengthen their economic situation during these challenging times. Currently, the small reservoir system accounts for 18% to 20% of the nation’s total rice and food production, making the destruction of these crops a grave threat to national food security. The impact of the drought has been particularly pronounced in the northern, central, and eastern provinces, where the reservoir systems are facing the greatest challenges. At present, only 21% of the small irrigation system is functioning properly, with reports indicating that around 4,800 reservoirs are out of service due to inadequate maintenance. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
