According to preliminary findings, the fraud may date back to 2025, with the amount involved likely exceeding initial estimates. Investigators are now probing whether other officials within the office may have colluded in this scheme. Officials alerted Tushari Thennakoon, the District Secretary of Nuwer Eliya, after beneficiaries reported not receiving their subsidy payments.
