The hearing was presided over by Colombo High Court Judge Buddika C. Ragala, who has scheduled the next court proceedings for September 30. Notably, this appearance follows an eventful backdrop: Gnanasara Thera had been serving a six-year prison sentence for contempt of court, but was granted a special presidential pardon by former President Maithripala Sirisena in 2019. However, the Supreme Court recently invalidated that pardon, prompting his return to court. Following the Supreme Court's ruling, several prison officials reportedly visited the temple where Gnanasara Thera is believed to work, situated on Nawala Road in Rajagiriya. However, it has been conveyed that there were no updates regarding his whereabouts. In response to these reports, representatives for Gnanasara Thera have firmly rejected the claims, stressing that no officials visited the temple and dismissing rumors of his concealment as unfounded.
