Decline in Flight Operations at Sri Lankan Airports During Early 2023 The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka has reported a significant 9% decrease in overall flight operations through the nation’s airports during the first eight months of this year. According to the latest data released by the authority, a total of 40,111 flights were handled at Sri Lankan airports from January 1 to August 31. Of these, 38,524 were scheduled operations, while 1,587 flights fell under unscheduled services. In comparison, the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake recorded 44,185 operations during the same period last year, reflecting a reduction of 4,074 flights this time around. The report attributes this decline primarily to the ongoing military unrest in the Middle East, which has adversely impacted air travel numbers. Looking at passenger traffic, the total number of travelers utilizing the country’s airport system over the past eight months stands at 6,439,213. This marks a decline compared to the previous year, when 6,630,728 passengers were processed at Katunayake alone. Additionally, the authority noted that the total volume of air cargo transported through the airport during the relevant period amounted to 144,713 metric tonnes. This includes 89,470 metric tonnes of goods that were exported, while imports accounted for 55,243 metric tonnes, according to data provided by the Civil Aviation Authority. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
