Speaking at a special media briefing in Colombo, Gammanpila emphasized the gravity of the situation, citing the intelligence reports that warned then-Defense Secretary and police officials of impending attacks orchestrated by the likes of Zahran Hashim, noting a lack of understanding regarding Zahran's identity and intentions. He recalled that during this crucial period, incidents such as the murder of police officers in Vavuniya, the destruction of a Buddhist shrine in Mawanella, the discovery of explosive materials in Wanathavilluwa, and the testing of a motorcycle bomb in Madakaleppu were all under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department. Gammanpila asserted that a thorough understanding of Zahran’s activities should have fallen under the purview of Senewiratne and Abeysekera, who were both responsible for intelligence operations at the time. In his remarks, he revealed that concrete evidence had been presented against Shani Abeysekera, including 11 charges related to his failure to apprehend Zahran promptly, suggesting that such negligence was a deliberate act to mislead investigations. He lamented the unprecedented nature of having a suspect lead the investigation into their actions, a situation he deemed regrettable in the Sri Lankan context.
