Sri Lanka's SMEs Urged to Engage Globally, Minister Emphasizes Growth Opportunities The Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development, Chaturanga Abeysinghe, has underscored the necessity for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Sri Lanka to extend their reach beyond the domestic market and become active players in the international value chain. Minister Abeysinghe made these remarks at the '2026 National Small and Medium Enterprise Summit', organized by the Lanka Commerce Chamber. This year's summit, themed "Scale Up 2.0", aimed to provide crucial guidance on elevating businesses from their current state to a higher level. While elaborating on the current landscape, the Minister pointed out that there are over 1.2 million small and medium enterprises operating in the country. However, a significant majority of these businesses remain at a very small scale. He noted that a lack of proper integration with both local and global market networks presents a major gap in their development. Abeysinghe reaffirmed the importance of targeting both local and international markets when advancing a business from one level to the next. He also assured that the government would facilitate the necessary technological and financial support to aid this transition. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
