Trade Unions Oppose Government Plans to Shift EPF and ETF Management Trade unions have expressed strong opposition to the government's attempts to transfer the management of the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) and the Employees' Trust Fund (ETF) from the Central Bank to a different mechanism. This initiative has raised serious concerns among workers regarding the security of their retirement savings. Chathura Samarasinghe, the General Secretary of the Lanka Estate Workers' Union, voiced these concerns in a statement to the media. He highlighted that these funds, which have been safeguarded under the Central Bank for over six decades with state support, are now at risk due to the government's establishment of a committee to explore their transition to a tri-partite structure. Samarasinghe warned that any move to remove these funds from the Central Bank would effectively strip workers of what he described as their only financial security. “The money earned by workers over 30 to 40 years of their lives should not be subjected to mechanisms that serve the interests of investors or other parties,” he emphasized. He pointed out that this step appears to be based on recommendations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), mentioned in reports issued for 2023 and 2024. Samarasinghe lamented that previous governments also attempted to misappropriate these funds, and he finds it regrettable that the current administration continues this unsuccessful trend. Samarasinghe asserted that the current government lacks a mandate from the people to make such decisions. He warned that any actions taken to jeopardize the security of these funds without the consent of the workers will provoke strong responses from the unions. In conclusion, he urged the government to reconsider its decision and take necessary steps to safeguard the rights of workers regarding their retirement funds. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
