Government Takes Swift Action to Assist Flood-Affected Families in Badulla In a commendable response to the recent floods caused by the ‘Ditwa’ cyclone, the government is actively working to provide urgent relief to those affected in the Badulla District. Minister of Public Infrastructure and Community Development, Samantha Vidyaratna, underscored the efforts being made to deliver essential assistance to the impacted communities. During a ceremony held at the Badulla District Secretariat, financial aid in the form of compensation cheques was distributed to families in the Badulla Divisional Secretariat area. The initiative saw the allocation of Rs. 50,000 to each household that completely lost their homes, alongside a substantial Rs. 1 million granted towards the purchase of new houses for two families. Additionally, for two other families, a total of Rs. 20,000 was provided as the first installment, followed by another Rs. 15,000 as the second installment to aid in rebuilding efforts. The minister also announced that funds totaling Rs. 2 million had been allocated to assist 24 families with repairs for homes that suffered partial damage. Moreover, 205 families have qualified for compensation up to Rs. 500,000 without the need for an assessment report, with an initial disbursement of Rs. 300,000 distributed to assist them. Cheques were also handed over to the owners of 13 homes based on evaluation reports that confirmed their eligibility for compensation. At the event, Minister Vidyaratna highlighted that out of 5,515 homes reported as partially damaged, over 3,000 families have already received their compensation, with proceedings for 507 additional families nearing completion. He revealed that a total of 589 houses deemed entirely destroyed have been allocated Rs. 50,000 each in compensation. Furthermore, he informed that Rs. 225 million has already been distributed as support for 1,633 families living in temporary accommodations after being evacuated from high-risk areas in the past six months. In the broader scope of recovery efforts, relief funds amounting to Rs. 463 million have been allocated for cleaning homes affected by the disaster, and an additional Rs. 212.4 million has been reserved for providing kitchenware to 4,248 families. Furthermore, Rs. 81.5 million has been directed to assist schoolchildren impacted by the disaster. The minister also noted that over 750 businesses affected by the floods have received a combined sum of Rs. 43.1 million, while agricultural support worth Rs. 2.013 million has been provided to 5,540 farmers through the Department of Agriculture.
