Government Affirms Commitment to Equal Enforcement of Law Amidst Social Media Criticism The current government is steadfast in its commitment to enforce the law impartially across all segments of society, amidst a barrage of harsh criticisms and mockery on social media. Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation, K.D. Lal Kantha, emphasized that the journey towards fulfilling the promises made to the public will not be halted under any circumstances. During an event marking the provision of permanent appointments to a group of long-serving irregular and substitute employees within the Department of Agriculture, the minister shared these insights with the media. His remarks came in response to concerns raised by journalists regarding a special message delivered by the heads of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters. He underscored the importance of properly understanding the message conveyed in the correspondence and reiterated that the law cannot be enforced selectively. Lal Kantha urged all parties to refrain from making demands that deviate from the public consensus aimed at executing justice fairly for everyone. Addressing criticism from the opposition and various factions concerning the new anti-terrorism legislation, the minister acknowledged that citizens have the full right to protest, submit petitions, and express their opinions on any proposed bill in a democratic society. He clarified that the government never overlooks the public sentiment and asserted that the current administration came to power with the objective of strengthening democracy. Moreover, he noted that discussions are underway regarding the process of granting clemency to prisoners, ensuring its alignment with democratic principles. In light of the criticisms directed at the government and the attacks on social media, the minister remarked, "Just look at how much we are being ridiculed and how much abuse we are receiving. But it seems we haven't let that deter us; we continue to advance our policy agenda. We don't have time to chase after what various YouTube channels or individuals say. Our sole focus is on fulfilling the promises made to the people." Additionally, he expressed great satisfaction with integrating a group of workers, aged over 50, who have faced challenging conditions for ten to thirteen years within government farms into permanent positions. He stressed that gradually addressing vacancies in the public service and enhancing salaries and benefits for public servants remain key priorities for the government. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
